Consulting: Data Integration Strategy
Most data warehouse projects strive to deliver integrated data which supports decision makers throughout the organization. We suggest coupling the organizational desire with a proven approach and framework (data warehouse bus architecture) before prematurely jumping to technical solutions.
Whether you’re just getting started or dealing with a dozen existing standalone data marts, the Kimball Group will help define an extensible data architecture to ensure integration and consistency. Working with the project team and business stakeholders, we’ll create the data warehouse roadmap, listing the performance measurement data that will be ultimately integrated in the data warehouse, along with the common linkages (i.e., conformed dimensions). The resulting enterprise data warehouse bus matrix is a critical planning, communication, and development tool.
For organizations that have already built data repositories, we assess the current environment, in conjunction with the target bus matrix, to develop a strategy and implementation plan for bridging from the current state to the ultimate end goal.
If DW/BI teams fail to focus on integration and consistency, their warehouse deliverables will merely provide easier, faster access to inconsistent data. While that may address short-term needs, it likely won’t be resilient over time. We recommend that you establish a data integration strategy as early as possible to minimize downstream rework.
